The Massillon Lady Tigers made history on Saturday evening in Medina with a 75-50 win over Avon. For the first time in program history, they had won district titles for two straight seasons. Prior to their 2025 and 2026 titles, they had won the district only twice (1994, 1999). This year the 8-seeded Tigers were able to win handily over 19-seed Avon. Led by Delaney Pierce (29 points, 16 rebounds), Hannah Nicola (17 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals), and Rylee Adams (17 points, 12 rebounds), Massillon controlled the boards and played aggressive defense en route to their victory.
Massillon will take on 3-seed Twinsburg on Tuesday in Wadsworth in the regional semifinal. Tip will be at 8pm.
1st Half
Avon struck first to take a 2-0 lead, but Massillon made sure it was the only time that the Eagles led. Delaney Pierce gave the Lady Tigers the lead with a 3-pointer and they never looked back. Rylee Adams drilled a 3 for the first of her career-high 17 points and continued her dominant run off the boards, grabbing a rebound and giving the Tigers second-chance points with a 3-point play. Aggressive defense aided the Tigers in the early going as steals, traps, blocks, and turnovers were abundant. Nicola, Adams, and Kynslie Williams picked up steals and propelled the Tigers ahead to a 24-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Nicola opened up the second quarter with a 3-ball. She followed it up with a second 3 and the Tigers soon jumped out to a 32-15 lead. Jaryn Wolff found a cutting Adams for 2, and Adams returned the favor on a feed to Pierce for a bucket. Mia Page banked one in and picked up a steal to put the Tigers in front by a score of 40-18. The Eagles put together a run towards the end of the half, but Massillon led handily at 40-25.
2nd Half
Delaney Pierce and Hannah Nicola combined for the first 7 points of the 3rd quarter to give Massillon a 22-point lead. Avon responded with a 7-0 run of their own, but Rylee Adams laid one in off an inbounds pass to quell the slide. Pierce hit 3 free throws, Nicola hit a pair of free throws, and the Tigers increased their lead to 57-37 at the end of the quarter. Jaryn Wolff nailed a 3 to start the final quarter, and Massillon was soon well in control with a 24-point advantage. Kynslie Williams capped off the scoring with back-to-back layups and Lucy Herrera capped off the district title game with a steal. The Lady Tigers cruised to victory and a district title for the second season in a row.
