Spotlight Players: Week 1 versus Glenville

Massillon fought hard last Friday but fell in a close game to Glenville. Take a look at a couple players who stood out.

Offensive Spotlight: Savior Owens, Junior Running Back

#1 Savior Owens celebrates under the lights after his touchdown run.

Savior Owens made his first start on Friday against a very talented Glenville defense. Not one spectator would have assumed Owens had mostly seen “mop-up time” on the varsity field last season– he played like a returning starter against a fearsome opponent. Owens picked up 131 yards rushing and completed 2/2 passes for 26 yards. He was often commanding the offense at wildcat and picked up a touchdown and a huge run by masterfully executing misdirection plays. Owens converted on several crucial 3rd and 4th down plays, aiding Massillon in their bid to storm back in Friday night’s contest. He also forced overtime after making the game-saving tackle on Glenville’s blocked kick return. For his standout play in his first start, Savior Owens is the offensive spotlight player of the week.

Defensive Spotlight: Ja’Dyn Williams, Senior Linebacker

#9 Ja’Dyn Williams leads the Tigers out onto the field for Friday night’s season opener.

Excellence is what the Tigers have come to expect of team captain Ja’Dyn Williams, and excellence is what the Williams delivered once again versus the Tarblooders. He picked up 17 tackles (9 solo, 8 assists) in last week’s contest and added 1.5 tackles-for-loss. The 17 tackles are a personal best for Williams and rank 2nd all-time (tied with Nick Liebler in 2020 vs Perry) in recorded Massillon statistical history. Ja’Dyn showed why he is a team captain and a defensive leader throughout his performance in the Tigers’ comeback attempt– he is this week’s defensive spotlight player.
